Sometimes we can forget to be mindful or just straight up have “yoga brain” so here is a go-to guide on yoga etiquette at HYU. Our teachers, desk crew, manager, cleaning crews and everyone in between work very hard to make our space a tranquil safe haven for anyone who needs it, help us by doing the same.
-
Arrive on time. Give yourself the minutes you need to check in, stow your stuff and roll out your mat before class starts. Rushing into a yoga class is stressful for both you and your classmates.
-
Minimize conversations. Respect silent meditation once entering the yoga room and keep the chit chat and the air of social happy hour in the lobby.
-
Remove your shoes. Going barefoot in the yoga rooms is courteous year-round. By removing your shoes, you’re not only helping with studio cleanliness, but you’re respecting a space cherished by others.
-
Devices are a NO. Want the stink eye from a classmate? Just bring your iWhatever to class. Whistles, dings, blips, and screens are distracting! Yoga is a chance to escape the digital addictions and distractions, offering you a rare chance to be fully present. We love a good yoga selfie, just make sure it’s before or after class.
-
Can’t stay for savasana? We get it, time is short, but many of your classmates live for savasana and by shuffling out during the most restful stage, you’re disrupting everyone’s peace. (Absolutely, positively have to leave early? Let your instructor know before class, set up next to a door and pack up and scoot out as quietly as you can before savasana).
-
Be aware of your space. Classes can get packed; when last minute stragglers file in, be neighborly by making room if it’s available. In less packed classes, it’s common courtesy to stagger your mats so the person behind you can see the instructor.
