Hot Yoga for Beginners: What to Expect at Your First Class

Thinking about trying hot yoga but not sure what you’re walking into? You’re not alone. Almost everyone feels a little nervous before their first class. The good news: you don’t need to be flexible, you don’t need to know the poses, and you definitely don’t need to be “good at yoga.” Here’s exactly what to expect, from the moment you book to the moment you roll up your mat.

Pick a Beginner-Friendly First Class

Every class at Hot Yoga University is open to beginners, and our instructors offer modifications throughout. That said, a few classes make an especially easy first step:

  • Hot Hatha: a slower-paced class in our hot room, with longer holds and a focus on alignment. A great way to get to know the heat.
  • Infrared classes: Infrared Yin and Infrared Mat Pilates run at a gentler 85 to 90 degrees, so you get the warmth without the intensity.
  • Non-heated classes: all the yoga, none of the heat. Perfect if you’d like to learn the movements first.

Wondering how hot “hot” really is? Our guide How Hot Is Hot Yoga? breaks down all three rooms.

The Day of Your Class

  • Hydrate all day. Drink water throughout the day, not just right before class, especially if you’re taking a heated class.
  • Eat light. Most people feel best leaving about two hours between their last meal and class.
  • Dress to sweat. Lightweight, breathable workout clothes work best.
  • Skip the perfume. We share the air, so please arrive scent, odor and smoke free.

What to Bring

Bring a yoga mat, a towel and water. Don’t have a mat or towel yet? No problem. You can rent both at the front desk, and we have water for sale plus a filtered water fountain with a bottle filler. A towel laid over your mat helps soak up sweat and keeps you from slipping.

Please leave glass bottles at home. Only mats, towels and water or other clear liquids go into the yoga rooms.

When You Arrive

Plan to get here about 15 minutes early. We’ll check you in and have you fill out a quick form, and you’ll have time to find a spot and settle in. The front desk can get busy right before class, so a few extra minutes makes everything easier.

One important thing: our doors lock 5 minutes after class starts, and we can’t let anyone in once class is underway. Arriving early means you won’t be left on the other side of the door.

Before class, take off your shoes outside the yoga room and leave your phone outside too. If you have an injury or a health concern, are pregnant, or just have questions, let your instructor know before class starts.

During Class

The yoga room is a quiet space, so you’ll notice people resting on their mats before class begins. Once class starts, just follow along. Your instructor will guide you through each pose and offer simpler options along the way.

  • Go at your own pace. Work each pose at your own level. Flexibility comes with practice.
  • Take breaks whenever you need them. Resting on your mat is always welcome, and nobody is watching you.
  • Drink water whenever you need it.
  • Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous or unwell, stop, cool down and let your instructor know.

Class ends with Savasana, a few minutes of rest lying on your back. It’s part of the practice, so stay for it if you can. If you need to leave early, let your instructor know before class and slip out before Savasana starts.

After Your First Class

Your first hot class can feel challenging, and that’s completely okay. You might feel tired or a little sore afterward, especially if the heat or movements are new to you. Keep drinking water after class, and give your body a few classes to get used to the heat. Most people find it feels easier each time.

Common First-Timer Questions

I’m not flexible. Can I still do hot yoga?
Yes. Yoga isn’t about being flexible, and that misconception keeps a lot of people from ever trying a class. You’ll work each pose at your level from day one.

How long are classes?
Most of our classes are 60 minutes. Hot Sculpt runs 45 minutes and HotFiit runs 40 minutes.

Is hot yoga safe for everyone?
If you have high or low blood pressure, are pregnant or nursing, or have a diagnosed health condition, check with your doctor before taking a heated class. Our non-heated room has a full schedule too. Students must be at least 13 to take heated classes.

How often should I come as a beginner?
Whatever fits your life. Many people start with two or three classes in their first week to try a few different rooms and teachers, then settle into a routine they enjoy.

Still have questions? Our yoga FAQs and studio etiquette guide cover the rest.
